Instructor Competency

How does NDTA measure the competency of our instructors to teach the NDTA Approved Certificate courses?
We have a very rigorous and specific process for becoming an NDT instructor. It involves the following components:

  • Taking additional advanced courses in NDT
  • Participating in specific workshops for developing teaching skills
  • Participating in advanced handling courses developed specifically for instructor candidates
  • Assisting in one full 8 week course with one instructor and half on a second course with a different instructor.

All of the above have to be accomplished and the instructor candidate’s competencies are evaluated and documented all throughout the process. If the candidate has met all requirements and has demonstrated competence they obtain the instructor status.

There are specific requirements that have to be met every year in order to maintain an active status as an instructor. These include a minimum number of ongoing treatment hours with clients with neurological conditions, a set number of continuing education hours and a minimum number of required teaching hours to retain competency in that area.. In addition, the instructor must maintain state licensure in his or her profession, which also requires additional continuing education hours and maintain private malpractice insurance.

We have a curriculum we follow which has been revised and updated. We have collaborated in its development and as a group and we follow it. We have an instructor evaluation form that the students are given and asked to fill out and send directly to the office. We have a quality assurance committee that examines these evaluations and addresses issues related to quality of instruction. The questions on this form give the students a way grade the quality and standards of the instruction.

We have specific criteria to accredit our courses:
  1. The course must be taught by active NDTA instructors and include all the components as defined in the manual.
  2. The NDTA instructor has to follow all the guidelines set by the IG and NDTA including following the established criteria for acceptance of participants in the course.
  3. Submit all required paper work and fees to the office in order to obtain the certificates.

Please feel free to contact us with any additional concerns.
