Treating the Client with Adult Hemiplegia Using Neuro-Developmental handling Strategies, instructed by Steve Anderson, PT

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a two-day introductory NDT course and will focus on the treatment and management of the adult hemiplegic patient. It will cover the most current scientific basis for the NDT approach and principles of treatment. Normal biomechanics of the UE, including causes of a painful shoulder, the LE and gait will be included. Treatment strategies for managing a number of underlying impairments that impact UE function, functional mobility and trunk control will be addressed through lab sessions. The goal of this course is to provide the participant with a variety of treatment strategies, the rationale for their use, and patterns of progression that may be utilized in treating patients with CVA.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Describe the basic principles of NDT.
• Identify the prerequisites for normal movement and understand how they influence the ability to participate in functional activities.
• Describe how impairments resulting from CVA impact functional skills.
• Demonstrate treatment strategies used for appropriately increasing demand and challenge for improved UE and LE function while incorporating responses in the trunk.
• Explain how impairments in various systems of the body may lead to functional limitations.
• Provide examples of designing effective treatment strategies for a variety of impairments and functional limitations.
• Explain NDT clinical decision-making regarding the use of assistive devices and other adjuncts.
