This course, with content based upon Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) concepts, principles and practice model, will explore the relationship between postural control, alignment and function as these components relate to feeding, swallowing and respiratory/phonatory skills. The dynamic integration of the multiple systems (including respiratory, postural and gastrointestinal) is more essential to improving skills in these areas than oral motor treatment alone. Case studies will be used to demonstrate use of this model of assessment, with application to treatment planning. A strong emphasis of this course will be upon treatment, and use of this problem-solving approach in optimizing our effectiveness in achieving improved feeding/swallowing and speech function in children with cerebral palsy and other neuromotor disorders. Lecture, facilitation labs/experiences, case studies and treatment demonstration will be utilized within this course to enhance learning.
