INSTRUCTORS

Monica Diamond, PT, MS, NCS, C/NDT

Kris Gellert, OTR/L, C/NDT

DESCRIPTION

Through lectures, labs, and patient demonstrations, participants will have an opportunity to develop their understanding and skill in treating the functional limitations of patients with neuromotor system impairments, across the continuum of care. Particular emphasis will be placed on the need for an understanding of the entire body, and the development of skills in the management of multiple body segments in order to achieve functional goals of all disciplines. Labs will provide an opportunity for assessment and practice of strategies for improving patient performance of mobility and ADL activities. Problem-solving for individual patient needs will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this seminar the participants will be able to:

  • Explore problems in performance of functional activities and ADL’s, and investigate potential causal factors.
  • Understand how the knowledge of normal movement and the understanding of the patient’s movement problems direct development of an individualized treatment plan.
  • Gain a greater understanding of the linkages of the body and the need for treating the body as a whole and not just as individual segments.
  • Learn and practice strategies to facilitate improved function during various ADL and functional activities.
  • Address current practice issues including:
  1. Relevant interventions and adjuncts.
  2. Achievement of optimal results of therapy.
  3. Development of interventions that address function quickly and effectively.
  4. Coordination of care among disciplines.
