Levels IV and V of the Gross Motor Functioning, Manual Abilities, Communication, and Eating and Drinking Classification Systems1-4 classify children with cerebral palsy (CP) whose functional limitations are severely physically impaired. With these systems, clinicians and researchers worldwide have standardized ways to describe children’s functional abilities. These children may be the focus of quantitative and qualitative studies that provides information to all involved with their care. Caregivers, including therapists, may then gain deeper understandings of their unique needs across their lifespans.
