Up, Up, and Away! Exploring the Environment
Pediatrics - Distance Learning Videos
Instructed by Jane Styer-Acevedo, PT, DPT, C/NDT
This advanced level course is intended for physical, occupational, and speech and language therapists who have completed the Basic Certification course and would like to enhance their knowledge with treatment strategies enabling the client to move through space and/or attain a vertical position to explore their environment.
We will explore how clients with a variety of presentations (diagnoses) may gain mobility in order to engage with their environment. Emphasis will be placed on movement lab to practice treatment strategies of moving another adult and being moved through transitions up to standing. Task analysis will be used in observation of clients transitioning off the floor via videotape towards function in vertical.
At the end of this lab session, participants will be able to:
Observe the movement sequence of a client attempting to transition off the floor and analyze the strengths and challenges of the client according to the International Classification of Function.
Recognize and list the multi system impairments observed while the client attempts to transition off the floor.
Analyze and prioritize the single system impairments that are challenging the client’s attempts to transition off the floor.
Complete a treatment sequence according to the prioritized single system impairments noted upon observation of a client who attempts to transition off the floor.
Facilitate a client’s transition off the floor and attempt their highest level of mobility in order to engage in play, exploration, and expanding their cognition.
