Using NDT in Telehealth, Participation and Function

Presented by Katy Kerris, April 29, 2020

We may not be able to be hands-on with our patients at this time, but we can use our knowledge of functional treatments and home assessment to help meet the needs of our patients from the participation standpoint.

Using What's Available - Home Activities for the Child with Low Incidence Impairment

Presented by Jacqueline Grimenstein, May 5, 2020

Treating the child with significant impairments and finding home activities presents challenges under the best of circumstances. Families generally rely on school programming to support the child's care. Outpatient and school-based therapy helps with skill development. With everyone staying home the family is now full time caregiver, therapist and teacher. Not having access to the equipment that is available in schools and during OP therapy leave therapists with the challenge of helping the family find the best ways to keep their child moving.

Using an ICF Format in Assessment to Treatment Planning for Pediatrics

Presented by Suzanne Davis Bombria, May 7, 2020

Therapists often ask, "Where do I start, what are the priorities in treatment, and how can I be more effective?" Contemporary NDT follows the ICF model to guide therapists from an individualized assessment to prioritized impairments to treatment planning. Join this webinar to go through this foundational, systematic analysis resulting in dynamic treatment toward child and family goals.

Treatment Strategies for UE and LE Integration in Function

Presented by Jodi Ann Renard, May 11, 2020

With the use of patient video, this webinar will present treatment principles and strategies of the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Contemporary Practice Model Approach as currently applied to adults with hemiplegia resulting from stroke. There will be an emphasis on functional movement analysis and the application of tactile feedback to enhance effective movement strategies for successful completion of meaningful, functional tasks. This webinar will emphasize a problem solving approach to integrated patient assessment and treatment based on an understanding of functional limitations, system impairments and based on an understanding of functional limitations, system impairments and motor dysfunction.

Managing the “Pusher”

Presented by Karen Guha, May 14, 2020

This webinar will provide an opportunity for health care professions to gain insight into managing the individual with contraversive pushing tendencies (“Pusher Syndrome”). The individual who suffers from a stroke and has “pushing” tendencies presents with unique impairments that challenge health care professionals. This webinar will present the current theoretical evidence and discuss how as NDT therapists we effectively assess and treat these individuals. Various treatment ideas will be presented to help guide therapists in making impactful clinical decisions and in enhancing functional outcomes when working with the individual who “pushes”.

Identifying the ‘What’ (impairments) to Structure the ‘How’ (interventions) Through Skilled Clinical Observations.

Presented by Cathy Hazzard, May 19, 2020

This webinar will use short video clips of clients (post stroke) to provide a platform for participants to fine tune and streamline their observational analysis skills. The case examples will be used to help participants identify the most significant single system clinical impairments interfering with these clients’ function. Discussion will consider all segments of the kinetic chain including the arm-leg connection. We will then move to a discussion of possible intervention strategies that would address these impairments in a challenging sequence that considers the environment, tasks (or sub-tasks) and handling options that might be considered. The webinar will attempt to use a presentational format with an interactive Q & A component via the chat feature.

Trauma Informed Practice

Presented by Kimberly Barthel, May 21, 2020

In these turbulent times, we are living trauma-informed practice in real time. This session is being offered as an introductory support to therapists working with children and families who experience stress from developmental trauma, experiential trauma and collective trauma. Enhance your attunement and co-regulation abilities as an adjunct to your handling and movement skills, both in person and when coaching others virtually.

NDT and Interprofessional Collaboration (Part I): Transference and Timing

Presented by Teresa Siebold, May 28, 2020

In neurorehabilitation, crucial concepts have been recognized and studied to promote recovery of function. The ICF is a valuable tool in guiding clinicians to treat the whole client, rather than just their impairments. However, clinicians often feel siloed with discipline-specific issues and goals. In the recipe for neuroplasticity, significant ingredients are gaining new insights and research into promoting efficiency within a rehabilitation team, and optimizing patient recovery. These include: Transference – the idea that the acquisition of one skill will enhance that of another; Interference – when dual tasking becomes too much for the client’s system and in fact impedes performance and learning; Collaborative Practice – the sharing of knowledge and skills to influence client care.

In this first session of a 2-part webinar, we will:

  • Define and describe Interprofessional Collaboration
  • Discuss the neuroplasticity concept of Transference, and how it may improve client outcomes (Interference to follow in part 2)
  • Use client case examples to integrate these concepts within the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Contemporary Practice Model to optimize recovery of function

Moving from Here to There: Understanding and Addressing Issues Related to Transitional Movements

Presented by Monica Diamond, June 3, 2020

The ability to move, control our body posture, and change positions allows us to actively participate in life. During this webinar, participants will explore normal transitional movements as well as issues related to movements performed or attempted by our patients. This process seems effortless and is the focus of exercise classes, such as yoga. Why are transitions so difficult for our patients? Sign up for this webinar as we explore concepts related to transitional movements – requirements, challenges, problem solving, and treatment.

Videos of patients will help to demonstrate the concepts presented.

NDT and Interprofessional Collaboration (Part II): Interference Concepts

Presented by Teresa Siebold, June 4, 2020

In this second session of a 2-part webinar, we will:

  • Review the importance of Interprofessional Collaboration
  • Discuss the neuroplasticity concept of Interference, and how it may impede rehabilitation (Transference was in part 1)
  • Use client case examples to integrate these concepts within the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Contemporary Practice Model to optimize recovery of function

The Webspace Webinar- Focus on the Webspace of the Thumb to Improve Hand Function

Presented By Bonnie Boenig, June 26, 2020

The webspace of the hand is the keystone of hand function. The uniqueness of the human hand is the ability to oppose the thumb to fingers in a variety of grasps. The neurogically affected hand is typically characterized by a loss of control of the thumb for opposition.

This webinar will address:

  • unique critical kinesiological aspects of the thumb webspace
  • treatment strategies to improve alignment and control of the thumb
  • options for taping and splinting of the thumb/webspace to impact hand function

Research Power Hour +

Presented by Kate Bain, Gay Girolami, Debbie Evans-Rogers, and Therese McDermott, July 14, 2020

  • Introduction: About the focus of NDTA Contemporary Practice ModelTM research being on the effectiveness of intervention for specific functional requests by clients
  • The 4 NDTA Instructors will share aspects of their own research
  • The work of the NDTA Research Committee - to assist clinician researchers with encouragement & support, funding, research articles, research methodology ideas & much much more
