Meeting in the Middle: Improving All Aspects of Function by Treating the Trunk: A One-Day NDT Course for PTs, OTs, & SLPs

9/6/2025

Instructed by: Monica Diamond, PT, MS, NCS, C/NDT

Baltimore, MD

NDT Approved Credit 8.0

Course ID: A0097

Session Description: Although we all learn about the “middle” of the body to some extent in school, as we deepen our understanding of the functions we are responsible for as therapists, we often find that we need to go back to the basics and improve our understanding and management of the trunk. Through its connections via the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle and neck, the trunk is an integral part of the functions that OT’s, PT’s and SLP’s address daily in the clinic. A greater understanding of the trunk will prepare each participant in this course to assess proximal problems and potential and to facilitate the postural control that is necessary for achievement of functional goals in each discipline. Course participants will explore “trunk control”, and its connection to the larger skill of “postural control”. Lectures and videos will enable course participants to deepen their awareness of the interrelationship of the elements of trunk control and the interaction of the functions addressed by each discipline. Lab activities will focus on hands-on assessment and treatment of proximal postural control components, leading to success in distal functions involving the head, arm and leg. The day will conclude with problem-solving relating to the challenges we all face in managing the trunk for achievement of functional goals.
