Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA) announces NDT Core Principles

Alexandria, VA. – The Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA), the international association representing the practice of neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) is pleased to announce the NDT Core Principles, a comprehensive framework guiding occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists in delivering exceptional care for individuals with neurological disabilities. The principles were developed by an interdisciplinary task force chaired by Jodi Renard, PT, DPT, CBIS, C/NDT, and comprised of ten C/NDT practitioners.

Robbi Farrow, OTR/L, C/NDT, president of NDTA shared, “As NDTA focuses on our new mission, vision, and strategic priorities, the board agreed it was critical to identify the Core Principles that differentiate the contemporary practice of Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) from traditional therapies. We assembled an interdisciplinary task force of eleven NDTA NDT practitioners and NDT-Certified Instructors who worked together weekly over the last seven months to do this important work. The result is nine Core Principles that will guide NDTA in everything we do for our members, practitioners, researchers, patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders now and into the future.”

NDT is an innovative, interactive practice model that emphasizes patient-centered care, dynamic engagement, and continuous adaptation based on advanced movement analysis. Focused on fostering long-term neuroplastic changes and functional independence, NDT equips patients to actively participate in meaningful life activities. The Core Principles of NDT include Patient-centered examination, evaluation, and intervention; In-depth analysis of movement within the context of function; Patient-generated goals drive the intervention process; Designing and implementing a plan of care; Therapeutic handling to enhance functional outcomes; Minimizing long-term implications of compensation; Promoting skill acquisition and retention; and Evidence-informed care to drive clinical reasoning.

“As Chair of the NDTA Instructor Group, I am excited for the roll out of the NDT Core Principles,” stated Kris Gellert, OTR/L, C/NDT. “NDTA has worked tirelessly to develop and refine these Core Principles which will serve as the cornerstone for all our educational offerings to include webinars, seminars, and certificate and approved advanced courses into the future. These principles will guide current practitioners in research and clinical practice and help others understand the importance of the contemporary practice of NDT in the assessment and treatment of those with neurological disabilities.

“These Core Principles set a new standard for the contemporary practice of NDT, emphasizing an evidence-informed approach that prioritizes patient empowerment and functional outcomes,” shared Cameron Curtis, CMM, CAE, NDTA’s executive director. “They will guide the future of NDTA and the C/NDT certification and ultimately positively impact the lives of the patients, parents, and care givers, our C/NDT therapists serve.”
