NDTA Research Committee

The purpose of the NDTA Research Committee is the establishment and recognition of the NDT Practice Model as an evidence-based practice. The Committee evaluates supportive scientific evidence that helps to validate the NDT practice model in the research community. The committee also works to support NDTA membership in their understanding and use of scientific evidence to enhance their clinician practice using the NDT practice model. Committee representation is a balance of instructors, clinicians, and academicians with C/NDT; PT/OT/SLP members; and members representing both pediatrics and adults.

Ideas, questions, discussion, and new members are always welcome!

Initiatives and Task Forces

As opportunities present, aligned with interests of members of the NDTA Research Committee and the NDTA Strategic Priorities, various initiatives and task forces are created within the NDTA Research Committee. Current task forces are listed below. This is not a comprehensive list as committee members are often working on smaller projects aligned with the NDTA Committee Goals and NDTA Strategic Priorities.

NDTA Journal Club

The purpose of the NDTA Journal club is to create an opportunity for members to meet online to explore current research that is relevant to the NDT practice model with the goal of enhancing NDT clinicians’ clinical reasoning and treatment skills. Starting in 2026, the Research committee, in collaboration with membership Committee and the instructor group, will facilitate virtual meetings that explore scientific evidence that relates to the NDT practice model.

Examining the Scientific Evidence

Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is a multi-faceted, interactive practice model used by occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists for patients with neurological diagnoses across their lifespans. It focuses on dynamic patient engagement, continuous evaluation and modification based on comprehensive movement analysis. NDT aims for long-term, positive neuroplastic changes and functional independence for fuller participation in life; and incorporates advanced handling strategies and evidence-informed practices that exceed standard therapy methods. NDT distinguishes itself from traditional therapy approaches through an integrated method that draws from patient strengths while combining functional and impairment-specific interventions.

Fidelity Measure Task Force

This task force is working toward development of a measurement tool that can objectify adherence to the NDT Practice Model. The aim is for this tool to be applicable to examining published literature or for peer-to-peer self-study. Click below to view the Network article.
